Learning & Improving

“We learn to do something by doing it.  There is no other way.” ~ John Holt

Living the kind of life we choose means there’s a lot of just jumping in and figuring stuff out.  Between Jeff and I we’re generally able to figure things out.  I could brag forever about Jeff’s incredible skills, but I’ll spare you the ramblings of a woman head-over-heels in love with her mate.  We learn by doing with varying levels of success.  Like most things for us, using our own hands gets the best results.  We simply learn whatever new thing or learn to improve old techniques and skills by jumping in and getting our hands dirty.  However, there are times when this is also true:

“A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people.” ~ Will Rogers

Thankfully we’re not short on books to read, internet searches to do, You Tube videos to watch, and smarter people in the forms of friends, neighbors, local groups, and other bloggers worldwide.

Trying to improve

I’m working on improving my food and still life photography skills right now.  It’s part of an overall creative and business goal that has me excited and intimidated.  It’s beyond time to improve these skills and I’m so very grateful for all those smarter people who’ve written books and blog posts because they are coming in handy.

What skills are you trying to improve these days and how are you doing it?

timing is a funny thing…we’ve added a few new clear glass products to our line and need to get some pics up on the website…was putting it off b/c we really don’t have great know-how for that type of still life photography. We have some “that will do”, but it’s challenging to get a good photo that shows the clarity, hue and any texture or embossing present. However, we’re in the midst of a website over-haul and will need to freshen up the photos…so, we too are very grateful for the wealth of info posted out there! Good luck!

Yes, we learn new stuff all the time, but I’ve never thought of how I take photographs of food. Now I have something new to research!
