I took the week off from work and have spent the last few days doing some fun stuff and bits of gardening work. We had a very rainy and cool June, making the garden growth a little spotty. However, the weeds didn’t seem to mind and are growing just fine. I’m trying not to get terribly worked up [...]

“The most noteworthy thing about gardeners is that they are always optimistic, always enterprising, and never satisfied. They always look forward to doing something better than they have ever done before.” ~ Vita Sackville-West Well, the first annual seed swap was a success! The weather wasn’t great so we had to move inside, the attendance was [...]

We spent most of our weekend outside and it was wonderful! Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to spend time with my love than at home and in our garden. We started planting in the garden and spent many an hour outside raking, planting, and generally picking up. There was also plenty of [...]

Interdependence is and ought to be as much the ideal of man as self-sufficiency. Man is a social being. Without interrelation with society he cannot realize his oneness with the universe or suppress his egotism. His social interdependence enables him to test his faith and to prove himself on the touchstone of reality. – Mahatma [...]

So its April First and that means that we’ve come to the end of our 6-month no grocery challenge. We did fairly well. I will admit to wanting some variation in the last month or so that our food storage couldn’t provide, but all in all we are well nourished and in good spirits. Some [...]

I’m getting ready for the seed swap. It’s a little over a month away, but those days are going to be packed with teaching classes on worm composting and canning and my own garden work. So I’m doing what I can now to hopefully avoid a serious rush later. While I hope to host a very [...]

To celebrate spring, we changed from flannel to linen sheets and took the window quilts down. As wonderful as it is to slip into those flannel sheets in late fall, it feels just as wonderful to shed them for linen in the spring. Shedding a layer while adding light helps us celebrate and transition to [...]

We’re on the hunt for a new kitchen table. We have been for a little while, but nothing has struck our fancy quite yet. We currently have an oval shaped table and I’ve never liked in this house. The shape is just too large and strange for the space. I looked through the weekly sale rag [...]

I started a few seeds over the weekend, sifted compost, organized some garden supplies, and spent numerous hours outside. It was wonderful to feel the sun on my face and hear the snow and ice crack under my boots. I didn’t even mind sliding and sticking in the mud now and then. It was wonderful [...]

I’ve been gardening a long time. I can honestly say, I’ve been gardening my entire life. My dad kept a garden and as a child I worked in there with him. When I was old enough, he gave me my very own garden in which I could plant whatever I wanted. I remember he made [...]
