A Month of Firsts

in Home & Garden,I Eat Local Because I Can

May has been an interesting month of firsts for Jeff and I and our adventures here at Two Frog Home.

First, while Jeff and I were out watching the bees, yesterday.  Jeff noticed this guy, the first frog we’re aware of to make a home in our garden.

Frog!

The frog has decided that the cinder blocks holding up the beehive make a good frog home.  We’re delighted to have him (her?).

We also made our first “farm” sales this past month.  We’ve traded things before and plan to continue that, but actually selling things from our garden is new to us.  It feels good.  It started with what we thought was going to be a garden swap early in the month.  At the swap most folks came wanting to buy, not swap, so we sold extra tomato, pepper, and flower starts from our greenhouse.

Over the weekend, we ran a bunch of ads on Craigslist and through local Facebook groups and sold the remaining extra starts.  Our heirloom starts seemed to be in demand and we sold them all.  We look forward to doing more of this in coming years.  We’re figuring out the greenhouse and how to use it to its fullest ability.

May has also brought a decision by Jeff and I to bring my classes in-house, literally.  We’ll be teaching canning classes from our kitchen, gardening classes from our garden, and hosting numerous discussions and informal bonfire classes in the coming weeks and months.  Can’t wait to share all of that with you.

As part of these classes we want to do more online.  To kick that off, on Thursday night at 6:30 PM Mountain time, I’ll be hosting an online canning / food preservation chat focused on getting ready for the season ahead.  I’ll be on a webcam and chatting with you.  I’ll also welcome and try to answer questions.  We’ll meet for one hour.  If you’re interested in attending, comment on this post or send me an email (mtkatiecakes@yahoo.com) to register.  I’ll email interested folks the details.  As with all my classes, space is limited.

Now, that I’ve shared all our exciting firsts, I want to hear yours.  Tell me your good and exciting news so I can celebrate with you.

I do wish I lived closer so I could attend your hands on classes. I just got a 16 quart pressure canner for myself from craigslist and I have no idea how to use pressure canners….. yet! I will get a lesson from my dad next time I get to go home, but still would enjoy learning from you as well!

Could you post a little more about the online chat? I am curious and you give just enough information to make me more curious.

thank you!
