Thrifty Therapy

by Kathie on April 6, 2010

I took yesterday off work to make time for appointments with the denturist and dentist.  I decided to use the time to do a little clothes shopping before my appointments.  I’m in need of new clothing, as most everything I have has been repaired multiple times.  I hate shopping for clothes, but it has become a matter of necessity so I wrapped my mind around it and got busy.

First I hit the local thrift store.  I found two pairs of pants for $4.50.  Even better than the great (& cheap) find, was the bit of game I played with one of the employees.  This particular store benefits and hires people in our community with developmental disabilities.  The man vacuuming the floor was obviously one of the disabled employees.  He kept coming close to me with the vacuum and then I’d take a few steps to the other side of the rack, only to see him pushing the vacuum towards my feet again.  I looked at him to notice that he was smiling and realized that we were playing a game.  It made my day, honestly.  Such a simple moment of joy when I was rather irritated with the process of trying clothes on.

After the thrift store, I hit a consignment shop were I found two very nice blouses for less than $17.  Finally, I hit Pamida.  I wasn’t expecting to find much at Pamida, but figured that I’d give it a whirl.   Well, I hit the clearance racks and found a wonderful black cardigan and those wonderful brown shoes for $5 each.  All in all, I didn’t do to bad.

As much as I hate the idea of retail therapy, my little shopping spree was exactly what I needed.  A few new things to make me feel better and a little relaxation before some nerve-wracking dental work.

Have you found any good bargains lately?

I am in the middle of a no-buying month for a challenge I am doing. but I have a little list of things every one needs. Wee one needs a new pair of muck boots, teen needs some shorts, and I could use a new pair of shorts for summer, I am also looking for a serger. But I am waiting till May when yard sale season kicks into high gear.

We found a thrift store in our area last week run by Meals On Wheels. Imagine my surprise to find great books for 10 cents each. All their clothing is $1.50 per piece.
Lots of household goods too. This store is now our favorite and we hope to visit it again soon. Since I can never have too many books it will serve us well. Because of budget cuts our local library has cut back their hours and we can’t always make it in.

Must be thrift shop season :)
I visited 2 of my favorites last week on the day they both had 50% off clothing. Got some great cord jeans for $1.50 each, a sundress for the same amt, a couple of belts, a great sweatshirt for my son-in-law (a WSU fan), and a cool duck statue for my herb garden.
I LUV thrift stores!

Hi Kathie,

I really like the shoes! My most recent bargin was a “Little Tikes” playhouse for my grandson. I got it at a yard sale, I asked how much and was told $10, I said mmmmm and then was told they would take $7.50 for it and take it apart and put it in my car :) These little house cost about $139 or more so I think I did good!!!!!

I had a banner weekend at the thrift stores. Upscale Resale had 50% off shoes, and I found a pair of gray walking shoes with nice stitching details, super comfy support and brand new soles for $3. Looked up the brand online and they go for anything north of $200! Definitely one of my best finds ever. Also found a couple cute printed tops to vary my usual solid color V-neck trend and a pair of longer, flattering shorts that doesn’t make me look like I have a giant rear. I love thrifting.

Those shoes are adorable! Sounds like you got some good buys. I’m always glad when I can find something for a good price. I have yet to find a decent thrift store around here so have gone back to shopping at regular stores–just making sure to keep the price low. I’ve been bouncing around sizes in the last 6 months so it makes it difficult when it comes to bottoms. My newest fav are dresses–perfect for the summers down here and allow for weight gain & loss without losing fit. :)
