Soup & Sewing

We had a wonderful dinner Saturday night with our friends.  Thanks to everyone who chipped in on the dinner choices.  Ultimately we had the potato soup with homemade challah and a dark chocolate layer cake with coffee frosting for dessert.   Jeff lobbied hard for the potato soup, saying that I misled everyone by calling it a simple soup.  It is more of a chowder and was well received by everyone.  Of course, the food as good as it was, played second fiddle to wonderful conversation.

A good part of the weekend was spent with my sewing machine, and it was good.  It was a time spent where everything just kind of clicked.  I got several great things made including a knitting needle roll that was made for a thank you gift, a tote bag with a matching wallet for another thank you gift, and a set of placemats for my mom for Christmas (my mom doesn’t read this blog or surf the internet so she won’t see them).  The placemats are easily reversible and this way she can use which of the very different fabrics she prefers best.

Your table is nicely set. Our everyday dishes are a mishmash of thrift store finds. But I have my grandmother’s china dishes, her silverware, wine glasses and a beautiful table cloth she embroidered. These precious things are brought out on holidays and those moments when we share our table with friends.

Your table looks lovely, Kathie! I forgot to take any pix last evening at our harvest dinner: all the veggies (including relish tray) came from my garden (except for the cabbage in the coleslaw)! Youngest grandson said, “I love your garden, Grandma.”

Our next family gathering at my house w/ be for St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6th) – a traditional Belgian celebration day. I’ll try to remember photos…

Glad your dinner went well. The placemats are lovely. I spent all day Friday sewing slipcovers for the 4 large pillows on the back of my sofa and 4 throw pillow covers. I bought a slipcover but it didn’t cover the pillows. I was thrilled to find the exact same color of the same fabric to sew the pillows for less than $20. So for less than $100 I got a “new” sofa. Sure feels good to make my home a little nicer thriftily.
