Be Here Now

by Kathie on November 24, 2009

Sometimes we get so busy dreaming and planning that we forget to “Be Here Now.”  I think that happens around the house most often, at least here at Two Frog Home.  Jeff and I are thinking about things we’d like to change, things we’d like to update, gardens we’d like to add, trees we want to plant, dreams of greenhouses, and and and…  All those dreams are good things, don’t get me wrong, its just that sometimes those dreams give the impression that what we have now isn’t good enough.  That isn’t truth, because what we have now is pretty darn good.

Recently, Jeff found a disposable camera on which only one photo had been taken.  One sunny day last week, before the snow fell, he took the remaining shots of our place – shots of the garden, the wood pile, the trees, the garage and the house.  The photos turned out rather grainy – no doubt the film was old and had been exposed to many temperature variations – still some are lovely in their mottled appearance.  Scanning them on our rather inexpensive scanner didn’t do much to improve their quality, but again, I love the photos.  More importantly, I love our home and if none of our other plans / dreams come to fruition that will be ok, because honestly being here now is pretty darn great.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough, and more.  It turns denials into accpetance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.  It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.  Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.  – Melody Beattie

I’m thankful this week of Thanksgiving for so very much not the least of which is the home I share with Jeff.  I hope you’re grateful for yours no matter what state of “dream home” it might be filling currently.

20 years ago hubby & I bought a doublewide mobile home on an acre and a half. No trees until an uncle gifted us with tiny ones. Those trees are huge now and this home seems more like home than any either of us have ever lived in. A few years ago 3 hurricanes roared thru our area in a few weeks time. How grateful we are that our home was spared when so many were lost. It is even more dear to us now.

Thank you for reminding me that things take time – trees take time to grow, gardens take time to fill out…

That is so true and you know Kathie married love is so much better with the passing of time. I was almost 19 and hubby was 22 when we got married and I thought I knew what love was. It’s so much stronger and sweeter with the passing of time. In Jan. it will be our 36th anniversary and I can honestly say I love him more now than when we first got married.

Thank you for posting this. Our house needs a lot of rather daunting work and it’s easy to focus on that instead of on the fact it’s our home, full of love.

Your place is adorable as it is–and definitely full of love.

Oh, how important that love is to a home… It has the power to overlook so much in a home and in us humans…

I’ll need to be reminded of those wise words in the future, I’m sure.

Ray LaMontagne has a song called “Be Here Now”. Hauntingly beuaitufl song but a difficult mantra to keep for sure.

I’ve heard the song and it is great. Be Here Now is a wonderful book written by Ram Dass. If you haven’t read it, I think you’d really dig it. It was written in the 60s and is just full of awesomeness (and yes that’s a word).

I was joking when I said to my hubby last Sunday “You could do much worse!” But isn’t it the truth…look around and see what others are living with. Mine is not the perfect life, but whose is. If you “do what you love, love what you do” and smile alot, you’ll convince yourself the best part may just be the journey!
Happy Thanksgiving.
