Not Buying It – Weeks 7 & 8

by Kathie on June 14, 2009

Not Buying ItClothing: I’ve been trying to be vigilant about changing from work clothes to chore clothes with aprons, so far it seems to be working.

Food: Still eating mostly from our storage.

Household: Being extra careful to wash out and re-use plastic bags.

Utilities:Longer daylight means less usage (if any) of electric lighting. We’ve been very diligent about unplugging things and turning off power strips.  Line drying clothes.

Gifts: I bought Jeff a rather expensive (for us) birthday gift, but its a large toolbox that he desperately needed so he can actually find things in the garage.

Exercises/Self-Improvement: Lots of yard work.  Lots of library book reading.

Homestead: We lost some tomato plants and all of our pepper plants in a frost (we were away) so we had to buy replacements but I bought the replacements for a $1 a plant at a local greenhouse – heirloom varieties too – I thought the price was a steal of a deal.

Weaknesses: I bought a glass of iced tea recently for a $1 because I was craving it at work.  I’ll be brewing my own at home from now on and leaving a container in the office fridge.

Purging: Nada.

We were invited to Happy Hour with a friend and figured, well, the appetizers are really cheap. We’re not usual happy hour people, so I’m not so savvy about the happy hour menu. Grrrr–we got nailed for our drinks. I’ll be more observant next time!

And a confession here: we bought patio furniture yesterday (adirondack style real wood, but unfinished) at half price. We’ve been looking for two years and finally just decided to go for this stuff–spent the afternoon sanding and filling nail holes. Paint tomorrow.

I’m in the market for new patio furniture too. I hate eating from the camp chairs on our outdoor table and want something nicer/sturdier. I don’t think we can avoid spending money, but I do want to avoid wasting it.

Good adirondack chairs are an incredible investment, I think. How awesome it’ll be to sit back & relax in those in the coming summer months!

Sorry you lost so much in the garden..we lost a whole row of greens, because we weren’t here to water when the weather turned really hot for a few days and we were away…we will replant some better greens (broccoli Robe)..Guess it takes disappointment to keep us thriving . Ginny B.
