Doing Not Thinking Challenge – Spring to Autumn 2009

by Kathie on April 21, 2009

doing-not-thinkingThere seemed to be a fair amount of interest and I know I’m up for the challenge, so let’s have another round of the “Doing Not Thinking Challenge.”

This is a challenge for all of us who make plans but don’t accomplish much for whatever reason.  It’s for those of us who spend a lot of time thinking and not enough acting and doing.  It’s not a competition to see who can accomplish their goals in the shortest amount of time, or about the size of the goal, but rather a network of dreamers joined together to offer support and encouragement.  We may find that as we put our dreams into action that some are just not reasonable at this point in time and that’s ok – its the going after it that’s important for this challenge.

Like the last one, let’s give ourselves plenty of time to accomplish our goals.  Let’s set the last update for the week of the Autumn Equinox (September 20th).  This doesn’t mean that you must be finished with your dream / goal by the Equinox, it just gives us a time frame to work with in, some dreams may take years to fully accomplish.  This challenge isn’t specifically about accomplishment, its more about taking action towards realizing your dreams.

Want to “do” along with me?  Here’s what you need to do: Pick a dream or a goal, any one of your many.  Examples might be: exercising 3 days a week, creating a budget to be debt free by 2011, learning to dehydrate, decluttering, etc.  Post your dream/goal on your blog or feel free to just play along here in the comments.  Start small one to two goals, if you finish early you can add another later if you so desire.

Updating: Once a week on your blog or in the comments section of my update (I’ll be updating on Tuesday afternoons) – post your update.  Tell us what you did to accomplish your dream / goal.  What worked, what didn’t.  If you didn’t do anything that’s ok too.  I’ll create a page here at Two Frog Home with a listing of participants, dreams/goals, and links to everyone’s blogs so we can all follow along easily.  Feel free to use the icon for your own blog if you so desire.

I look forward to participating with whomever wants to play along.  I know that last time many good things happened and I believe that will happen again this time.

My Doing Not Thinking Goal is 3 fold:

  • To be making 1/4 of our mortgage payment through my side business adventures by the deadline of this challenge (Autumn Equinox).  This means I need to step up the business efforts slightly – but I do have some plans that will be kicking off in another month or so.
  • To be making 1/2 of our mortgage payment through my side business adventures by a year from now
  • The money I do make from my side business will be applied to our mortgage on top of the monthly minimum, which we currently pay from our monthly salaries.  This will enable us to pay off our mortgage (our only debt) sooner and with less interest over time.

I’ve been gone and just read about your Patches. I’m so sorry. I know it’s always hard to lose a beloved pet.

I think I’d like to participate in the doing not thinking challenge. I’ll be considering my goals over the next few days.

Happy springtime to you!

I’d like to participate, but need to discuss with Himself so he can help me focus my 8 million goals down to one that’s important, feasible, and still within my control to accomplish. (“Make the best-seller list,” for instance? Not so much!)

Maybe that new book will make the best seller’s list, I know it will in my house. Can’t wait to see what you come up with that is in your control, though.

This is something I think will be helpful to keep me on task. For now I will be lisating my goals and doing some prioritizing. I appreciate being included in the challenge!

I’m totally behind on blog reading but count me in!

I think my two main goals are 1) Time management – finding a rhythm and routine that help me accomplish what needs accomplishing in the day. And 2) Decluttering – I need to start with a declutter list. My goal is to decrease my “stuff” and have a yard sale at the end of this goal.

Oy. Did I just say that?

Awesome Tara! I’ve decided that yard sales are weekends of torture but that never seems to stop us from having them. Good luck and I’m looking forward to reading about your progress!

Just found my way over from the Organic Sister. I could really do with this.

My main goal is to completely reorganise my home for easier living with a toddler so I feel more in control, less stressed and can fully enjoy time with my husband and child again.

Carin, Thanks so much for stopping by and joining in. That’s a mighty lofty goal you have, but I’m willing to bet you’ll get lots of support from the rest of us! I can’t wait to read about how you accomplish this very worthwhile goal.

LOVE this idea! My goals:
1. I will be moving in May, so: Preparing to Move, Moving, and Setting Up Home in our new house in a controlled and organized manner. Doing everything in my power to make our new house truly feel like “home”.

2. Take to plunge into gardening, but at my own comfortable pace.

3. Being conscientious about my Internet Time, ensuring that Internet Time is productive and not just time-wasting, and scheduling Internet Time so that it does not conflict with interacting with my family.

2. Create Soul Collage cards
3. Organizing and decluttering – which I have been working on already but want to continue with these areas
* storage
* Michael’s office
* bedroom closet
* front closet

Hello! I just found your blog (and now I’m not sure where!) and was wondering if it’s too late to join?

If not, my goals are:

1. Organize and declutter in the following areas: kitchen, desk area, sewing/craft area, closets. Give away or recycle the things I no longer need/no longer work.

2. Learn how to can! I’ve got lots of veggies growing on my porch and I’ll need to do something with them when it comes time to harvest them.

3. Exercise at least 3x a week, bumping it up to 5 in the summer when I don’t have work.

This challenge is hysterical — because it’s SO ME! Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm, plan, plan, plan. And then get distracted by my stomach and an invitation to coffee.

So… DECIDE in advance on what homeschooling-related activities we will and will not do next year… and stick to it. DO NOT get coerced into homeschooling other people’s children.

WATER the garden, so all that hard work doesn’t go to waste this summer. And EAT the veggies (starting with salad greens before they bolt!!).

FINISH decluttering clothes and books, so these boxes don’t sit in the dining room for another month.

Find son a desk that will work for him, and finish rearranging rooms.

Finish SEWING cloth mama pads, apron I started, and other projects I have sitting in a box.

Ok Kathie, I’m ready – joined the wagon prior to having a goal! =) My goal is to walk to work at least 3 days out of the week. I live 2 miles from work. Very doable. The challenge with this will be making sure I have appropriate footwear and rain gear for those days that are raining either in the am, pm or both!
Thank you Kathie!

Awesome challenge idea. I wish I’d run across it sooner. Today is the end of it though so I can only hope you’ll do another for 2010!

I hope you all have had success/progress on the path to your goals!
