The Great Bookshelf Hunt

You know when you’re not looking for something, say a nice sturdy, older bookcase, you see them everywhere.  There’s tons for sale at the thrift stores, people are selling them by the dozens in the newspaper, and every day there’s a new posting for one on freecycle.  Then when you decide you need one there’s not one to be found anywhere, yeah that’s where we’re at right now.  We’ve been looking for a month or two now and nothing.  This weekend, we hit the thrift stores again and came up dry.  There wasn’t a single bookcase to be found, it wasn’t that I found ones I didn’t like, there wasn’t a single bookshelf for sale.  I really want a nice old bookshelf, not a new one from press board, so  I won’t be visiting any furniture or box stores for one anytime soon.

Jeff did find and buy a new (well, new to us) pick-up truck.  Jeff has had the same pick-up truck for about 15 years, and it was a 1977.  It’s finally given up the ghost and the problem isn’t worth repairing, so he’s been hunting for a while for a replacement.  The new truck is a 1987, but runs well and is in great shape.  Mostly we just need a pick-up now and then, this will be perfect for those occasions.

The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing at home.  I did finalize the garden plans, or well I’m finished making the plan, I imagine it will change once the snow melts and I can actually get in the garden.

Thursday night I spoke about vermicomposting at a gardening discussion presented by our local library.  It was a great evening, the other presenters were awesome and taught me a ton.  One presenter spoke about growing heirloom corn and the other discussed soil amendments (mostly manure) and herbs.  I also met some wonderful other folks and just plain enjoyed talking about gardening with other local folks.

This week promises to be a fun one, with knitting later today, and lunch two days this week with friends!  May the coming week be a blessing for you.

Can you build a bookshelf? Sometimes I freecycle for the materials I need to build something, If I can’t find that something myself.

We have a 1989 pickup truck, and while I won’t/can’t drive it, it has earned its keep during home & garden projects.

My husband built us a bookshelf about a year ago as his first woodworking project, and it turned out great. We were delighted to replace our sagging pressboard & cardboard shelf with the new one. I second Karin’s suggestion.

I agree with the others– build a bookcase. Then you can build it just the way you want it.

I love your gardening plan… I have yet to figure out where my seeds/seedlings will be planted. I need to sit down and write out somethings….

Thanks everyone for the suggestion to build our own bookshelf. Honestly, both Jeff and I suck at woodworking and we don’t enjoy it making the process even worse. We tackle it when we have too, but the idea of building a bookcase sounds like pure torture to us both, and is guaranteed to cause a few little arguments.

We’re patient and it will be yard sale season soon enough…

Patience is a virtue that will pay off in the long run.

Just read the previous post too. Humph. I’m sick and tired of being regulated to death.

Your garden plan looks so nice and neat compared to mine, Kathie…nice straight, dark line/borders, neatly printed words. Mine looks like it was thrown together, even tho’ I spent the whole afternoon working on it!
