100 Things # 14) I Don’t Like Pickles
I’ve never really acquired a taste for pickles or anything pickled for that matter. I try to like them, I want to like them, but I just don’t.
I enjoy the art of pickling very much and am grateful that many folks like to receive gifts of my homemade pickles, pickled beets, and pickled carrots. I always sample one bite, but for the most part, I can’t eat them.

That’s pretty cute. *grin* My favorite pickles are “dilly beans” homemade, with lots of garlic and dill, from long straight homegrown greenbeans.

Isn’t that something? We make certain things and there’s just no siren-song to eat them…it’s that way for me with cookies and candy. I’m a glass of milk and homemade bread n butter gal.

I don’t eat pickles much either. Or relish.

I feel the same way. I really want to like them, but I just don’t. I can tolerate the tiny sweet gherkins though to a certain point. And I like sweet relish in potato and egg salad.

I love pickles but I don’t care for relish. LOL

I love pickles, relish, all that stuff. Anything salty.
Those look amazing.

I just found some jars of homemade pickles that my Mother put up over 20 years ago. They look very good, are all still tightly sealed, and have great sentimental value to me. I opened one jar and discarded the top layer or two and then tasted one of the pickles and it was very good with a normal smell! Do YOU consider it unsafe to consume these 20+ year old pickles?
Thanks,
Bob

Wow, that’s quite a find and question, Bob! Generally, I’m of the opinion that if the jar is still sealed and the food shows no signs of spoilage, then the food is safe to eat. Though 20 years is probably a longer storage time than even I would venture to eat. I’m sure no canning books would recommend consuming food preserved that long ago.
I say keep them saved for sentimental value and display them proudly. I see jars of food preserved in chemicals sold for decoration all the time, what you have is a much bigger treasure.
