My mail today only consisted of catalogs and I was surprised that I got two seed catalogs already. It’s only November and in Montana I have a lot of winter left yet before I can even really start dreaming of my garden. Oy, if this is the new trend, seed catalogs before mid-January, the winter will seem years long. I think I may need to just put these away in a folder that says do not open until February 1, 2008.
Does anyone know of a source that lists all the seed catalogs that sell Monsanto products? I read something recently and was surprised that a company I had purchased from in the past is really a subsidiary of Monsanto and I can’t place the article know and I don’t want to have the companies confused. I may have to stick to Seed Savers and a few other very trusted sources.

hey sweetie… robin (michigan) here…
i think that Monsanto owns pretty much all of the seeds that the general population (including farmers) can purchase. They’ve created sterile seeds so that everyone HAS to buy new seeds the following year…i went to an organic food/health seminar and Monsanto was THE hot topic…right up there with the genetically modified corn products that are in pretty much everything we eat (unless we only eat organically…thank God we do!)
Stick to heirloom vegetables and fruit seed sources…pricey, but SO worth it!
love you honey…
I think it is Seeds of Change that they now own. I used to love S. O. C. and I absolutely LOVE their chocolate bars; however I have been trying had to stick to the independent ones. I would love to see a site that list all the seed companies (and what ever else) that have ties to Monsanto.
I was surprised to get seed catalogs already too!
Seminis is the only vegetable seed company that Monsanto owns. They do not own all seeds, and they do not sell sterile seeds. Growers do agree to purchase new seed each year, but not because they are sterile.
Check out Fedco – they are inexpensive, interesting, and have a great selection. They hate Monsanto! They are located in Maine so they have a lot of experience with Northern gardening. I love the illustrations and commentary in their catalog.

I know this is an old post, but I have just been researching this and came across your blog. Here is a great thread on “Freedom Gardens” with a list of all of the seed companies supplied by Seminis, the Monsanto subsidiary: http://freedomgardens.org/forum.php?c=topic&op=index&cid=24&tid=4517
I posted today on Monsanto and Seed Company infiltration – they definitely do NOT own all seeds – thankfully! Here’s my post for more info: http://milkingweeds.blogspot.com/2009/01/are-monsanto-seeds-in-your-favorite.html
